Sadly, it's true. I took forever on this comic because I ended up not liking the script after I started drawing it. Second guessing my writing and my art is pretty natural and expected at this point. But for whatever reason - I can dive into spreadsheets and even contracts and easily see the clear path forward. I'll sit down on a spreadsheet and suddenly hours go by, and I'm done. Writing comics? Sometimes the strips come to me in the shower. Most of the time I think something is funny and then berate myself later when I forget what it was. It's the most unscientific and unproductive process imaginable. I may as well be throwing darts at a Ouija board for all the good my process does me.
Panel One:
Ian at a bar with a bottle in his hand. He looks exhausted.
Bartender: I've seen that look before. Tough day at the office?
Ian: Nope. I'm self employed. I'm a cartoonist and graphic designer.
Panel Two:
Ian in front of two monitors.
Bartender (off panel): Oh; so what is it? Girl dump you?
Ian (off panel): No, I've just been working on spreadsheets and contracts all day.
Panel Three:
Ian with his head down against the bar counter, drink still in hand.
Bartender: Ah - so you'd prefer to be working on your cartoons?
Ian: Nope. I realized I have an easier time working on spreadsheets than I did on this comic.
